Colton Bakery & Elliston on the way to Coffin Bay

This is an amazing bakery in the middle of nowhere! It was about 12kms to the nearest little town Elliston.
Its called Colton Bakery specializing in wood fire baked bread and has been opened here since 1861!! According to the blurb its been making bread the same manner for the last 150 years.

We bought a packet of sticky buns, 6 lunch rolls and a wholemeal loaf all for $10.50!! Its based on a honesty system - put cash in a money tin and grab the bread of your choice $3.50 a pop! It was excellent yummy bread!

This is obviously the girls posing in a foolish but happy manner while standing on Elliston historic jetty .... I can't quite tell you why its historic besides being around for a long time ... I guess!

Shots of Talia Caves

These are a few photos of the scenic Talia Caves route.
Please take note of the 3rd yellow & black symbol on the bottom row .... if you can't see ...it is a drawing a white pointer!!

The Lawlors minus photographer ...
It has an interesting coastline .... the problem about travelling from the West to the East is that you would already have been to the BEST beaches in Ozland hence its quite hard to get excited about these ones .... we even met some folks from Byron Bay - they have declared that Lucky Beach & Hellfire Bay as being heaps better than Byron!!?? Well, when we get to Byron we will judge for ourselves and let you know the verdict!

Talia Caves - Eyre Peninsula

You can see this interesting 'tub' formation about 20kms from Venus Bay - its part of the rock formations along the coast called Talia Caves - can't remember why it's called that.

Once upon a time it a huge cave with a fabulous roof and its entrance was from the beach ..... then the sea took control and erosion won the war .... hence the tub!

The edges are still crumbling in hence lots of warning signs 'keep away from the edge' ... we took a little walk down the edge towards the ocean where you can see the original entrance which has recently been closed by a rock fall. If not you could actually walk around in the tub ..... I think you could, years ago maybe ...??

But don't believe me ...come see it for yourself!!

Local Residents of Venus Bay

Meet the locals! Pelicans who have a great feed twice a day everyday - they are like folks on the dole hanging out at centrelink!! for the freebies!! ( I don't supposed that was a politically correct!!?? statement to make was it!?)

These are Pacific Gulls who are much much bigger then the tiny grey fellas that we normally see - they are second in the food chain of freebies than comes the littlelies!

This the view of Venus Bay - it was literally 6 feet away from our caravan! The tide is always low and the beach to lauch one's boat is 3 minutes away hence its a fisher's mecca.

Venus Bay & Coffin Bay South Australia 16th-20th March

Hi there! Sorry but my camera's in the car and I am cozy in bed and can't be bothered to get up as its wet and cold outside! So no photos until the next post!
We have been to Venus Bay and stayed 3 nights there ... it's a small fishing village ...extremely quiet and tranquil until the fisher people go out to get their allotted bag of 20 King George Whiting a day!! This must be the mecca for KG Whiting .... the caravan park was jammed packed like sardines in a row and everyone bar ourselves were there to get their kilos of fish. Our neighbour - lovely couple from Victoria had been there for 3 weeks with another to go ...by the time they leave they will have a 100kgs!!! of filleted KG Whiting - a market value of 4-5 thousand dollars!!!!! They will be eating fish until it came out of their ears and other places that I can't mention on a public forum!!! It is unreal .... the Bay of Venus will be depleted of their fisheys by the time that mob pulls out.
I know where all the rain that do not go to Bunbury fall ... on us! It rained on us in Esperance for a whole nite and 1/2 a morning. It rained all nite and 1/2 a day in Venus Bay and guess what folks ..... yup it has rained all last nite and all of today here in Coffin Bay!!! We have yet to explore any where around here as the weather has kept us in our VERY LARGE home on wheels! Its a minor miracle that there is still 4 in the family!! No dingoes or razor backs sighted ....yet!!!
We have another 2 nights here at Coffin Bay ...we hope to gobble a couple of dozen of famous Coffin Bay oysters tomorrow and do a bit of 4WD through the National Park ..... if the weather is kind to us!

Tinsey Tiny Baby Wombats

Sorry folks ...promise these are the last wombatty photos!! Meet Horace he is 5 weeks old and not very big!! Imagine this little critter will grow into a big fat fella like Danisha!
This is even a tinier baby - can't remember the joker's name and age .... must be only a few weeks old! We were allowed to pet/touch their little heads ... quite eerie .... like touching a smooth snake/lizard's skin!

Well after this great experience we left for Streaky Bay the next day.

Wombat Rescue cont....

Here is Kara with Denisha being placed on her lap!
Cuddling little Lucy ....

Here is the lady (she never introduced herself!!) with a Red .... his name is Zeze and is 14 months old but she treats him like a big fat baby!! I think she got him when he was 120gms - now he is about 18kgs!!

Wombat & Fauna Rescue - Ceduna

We spent an amazing hour and a half at this sanctuary .... listening to fantastic survival stories of these wombats and joeys.
This little joey is Lucy she is only 5 months old and is a Red Kangaroo but being female is actually bluey grey in colour?! Poppy & Kara were overjoyed to be able to interact so closely with the animals.
I have big Daneshka - 2 years old and 14 kgs heavy. She was definitely a handful!
Even Gary wasn't impartial to cuddling little Lucy!!

Ceduna - Shelly's Beach CP

After sluggishly zooming (oxymoron or what?!) across the last bit of the Nulla to Ceduna ... another 510kms, we parked ourselves at Shelly Beach for a quiet 3 day rest and major catch up of school work for the girls.

Let me tell you folks ... if you had a choice ..... live somewhere else! Unless you are a mad keen fisher person and want to make lots of money through a lot of hard work - oyster farming!!??
We had lovely fresh shark - pan fried on our outdoor BBQ = YUMMY!!

This is part of one of Poppy's & Kara's experiments - collecting water from a tree/bush ..... tying a plastic bag on 2 different foliage and seeing which want produced the most water. Quite interesting ......

Buried Ruins of Eucla!

Now .... don't get too excited cause there really isn't much to see!!!!
It was a bit of a dissapointment - there we were expecting to wander through deserted old ruins! But
alas all we got was sand sand and more sand .... with one stone structure 90% buried!

So it has turned out to be a photo shoot site for the Lawlors!

Well the girls had a mini "how far can you jump?" competition that was fun for 5 minutes before one came crashing down screaming ............................

The moral of the trip is if you don't need to stop at Eucla ..... DON'T!!!
